Humanist Ceremonies

What’s a humanist ceremony?

First things first, humanist weddings are legal in Scotland. Yes, that’s right! I can actually do the official bit (much to my mother’s surprise). That means you don’t need to pay a registrar to marry you, I can do it!

If you choose me, you will indeed be going to one of Mairi’s Weddings. Don’t get the reference? Here’s a handy video to fill you in.

They can also take place pretty much anywhere, at any time and can be anything you want them to be. They are centred around you, allow you to tell your story and are fun, unique and heartfelt.

All Humanist Society Scotland celebrants undergo months of training, mentoring and shadowing before they’re let loose on the public. We are observed annually and have to engage in continued professional development to remain registered. They also guarantee your ceremony will be covered if, for some reason, your celebrant is unable to make it on the day.

What is humanism?

Humanism is a shared belief that all human beings are equal and should aim to live their lives with kindness, compassion and integrity. It’s a way of viewing the world with curiosity, creativity and a trust in scientific enquiry.

Humanists believe that everybody has the right to live authentically as themselves, and that love is love.

  • Namings

Naming ceremonies are a great way to welcome new family members to the world. They are a celebration of life, community and love. A way of formally saying, ‘We are your family. We love you and are here to encourage, support and guide you through life.’

  • Weddings

Humanist weddings and civil partnerships allow you to celebrate your love in a way that feels right for you. Your story is the heart of the ceremony, so no two are the same. They are a way of acknowledging your commitment to one another in a way that is uniquely you.

  • Funerals

I hope to have completed my funeral training and be registered with Humanist Society Scotland by the end of 2023.
